STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING
BAMBOO CLOUD PAVILION
Composed of two amorphous ‘clouds’ constructed entirely from bamboo and supported by structural columns; the structure pushes the boundaries of bamboo’s material properties.
Hatfield Group Engineering provided structural peer review services for the temporary pavilion at the Gansevoort Plaza in New York City’s Meatpacking district. Two floating canopies made from both engineered and woven bamboo are supported by steel columns, and the raised sections of the foundation are clad in pieces of prefabricated stainless steel to act as benches. The canopy structure had to be shipped in pieces and reassembled on site to work within shipping constraints. Surrounding the trusses of the canopy, the woven bamboo exterior camouflages the main structure to create its amorphous appearance.
