Hatfield Group Engineering is excited to invite you to a Panel Discussion on “Eco-Driven Design: Building Resilience and Carbon Reduction."

On November 6, 2024, at the Chicago Architecture Center, where we’ll explore current trends in Building Resilience and Carbon Reduction Strategies. Five leading professionals will share their recent experiences with designing sustainable, low-carbon footprint, and resilient buildings, offering a valuable opportunity for discussion and learning.

From Carbon Reduction to Building Resiliency, a distinguished panel will present and discuss the many roles buildings take to improve our built and natural environment. This wide-ranging panel will discuss Eco-friendly building design, from the perspective of owners and designers, including carbon/energy reduction, resiliency strategies, water security and more. With a view toward the future, the panel will discuss Eco-friendly approaches and their impact on building design. This panel will briefly present their perspectives, then a lively panel discussion will ensue. Please join us to learn and engage in these urgent topics.

Koz Sowlat, SE, PE | Principal |
Hatfield Group Engineering
A principal with the Chicago office of Hatfield Group Engineering. He holds a bachelor's and a master's degree in structural engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Koz has served as Chief Structural Engineer for over 20 Chicago landmark buildings, including the 49-story 465 North Park Drive, featuring Chicago’s first installation of sloshing liquid damper.

Aaron J. Frame | Deputy Commissioner of Planning, Noise, & Environment |
Chicago Department of Aviation
Mr. Aaron Frame is the Deputy Commissioner of Planning, Noise, & Environment for the Chicago Department of Aviation (“CDA”).  Mr. Frame started his career as a state air quality permit engineer for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and worked there for nearly four years.  In August 2001 he started his career in the aviation field with the City and County of Denver and worked over five years as an environmental scientist at Denver International Airport.  Mr. Frame moved to Chicago in March 2007 to begin work at the CDA as an Assistant Commissioner and was promoted to Deputy Commissioner in November 2015.  He graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Engineering degree and from the University of Denver with a Master of Environmental Policy and Management degree.

Angel A. Dizon III | Senior Associate Vice President, Facilities | Northwestern University
Angel has more than three decades of real estate, planning, design, construction, operations, and maintenance experience.  He has executed $50B of design and construction in 300 cities globally, managed portfolios valued at $100 billion, and led innovation efforts focused on economic, environmental, and social impacts.  His work has been recognized by numerous architecture, engineering and construction awards. Mark Sexton FAIA, LEED AP | Partner | Krueck Sexton Partners
Founding Partner at Krueck Sexton, Mark is integral to the design and management of all the firm’s work. His dedication to design, detailing and responsible project delivery ensures the firm wide quality and consistency of all projects. Whether designing a U.S Embassy or reimagining an existing building, Mark brings both curiosity and experience to his work. He embraces the ideas of colleagues, investigates possibilities and engages with community, constantly evolving and advancing projects.

Bryan Schabel, AIA, LEED AP | Design Director, Principal | Perkins & Will
Bryan Schabel is a Chicago architect and the Design Director of the founding office of Perkins & Will, a global design firm where he has worked for nearly 30 years.  The firm’s work is driven by what they call Living Design – a unique and holistic framework which they have established to guide the development and self-evaluation of their work through seven design drivers that encompass performance, wellness, and beauty. Bryan’s diverse portfolio represents projects of many scales and programs both domestically and internationally.  Local work comprises numerous projects for Northwestern University, including the Ryan Walter Athletic Center, Oak Park’s Community Recreation Center, several residential high-rises, and most recently the CTA’s Damen Green Line Station.

Erleen Hatfield, PE, FAIA, F. ASCE | Managing Partner | Hatfield Group Engineering
Erleen is the Managing Partner of the Hatfield Group.  She has over 25 years of experience in the design of complex structures worldwide. She is both a licensed engineer and architect with a deep appreciation of the value of design and technical excellence.  Her open-minded approach to design enables clients to explore options to find the best fit for their project.  Erleen brings an extensive understanding of the evolving state of industry research and building codes, sitting on code committees and engineering research non-profit boards.
